Bejeweled Wiki

PopCap Games, Inc. (referred to as PopCap Studios on the EA webpage, commonly known as PopCap) is an American video game developer located in Seattle and is a subsidiary of Electronic Arts. They are the developers of the Bejeweled series of games, for which they have been inducted into the Computer Gaming World Hall of Fame.

Founded in 2000 by John Vechey, Brian Fiete and Jason Kapalka, the company initially started out as "Sexy Action Cool" and made a strip poker game called "Foxy Poker", which was supposed to serve as a revenue stream for their future titles. The company was built on the success of Bejeweled, their first game under the PopCap name. PopCap had acquired Sprout Games in 2005 and had acquired Retro64 in 2007, alongside acquiring other casual developers to extend their catalog.

On July 12, 2011, PopCap was sold to Electronic Arts for about as much as $750 million,[1] where it remains a separately-branded unit as of 2018. Since the acquisition, PopCap has seen its focus shift more firmly onto mobile gaming, its pre-EA employee force shrink, most of its founders depart and reduced its video game output, opting to mainly continue supporting existing free-to-play games.[2]

In addition to Bejeweled, PopCap are also the creators of the Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle and Zuma franchises, amongst others.
