Flame Gem is a type of Special Gem that appears in the Bejeweled series. First introduced in Bejeweled Twist, it is the successor to the Power Gem from Bejeweled 2 with a redesigned flame appearance and detonation animation.

It is usually created when the player matches four gems of the same color. In Bejeweled 2 and Twist, it can also be created by matching five or six gems in an "L", "T", or "+" shape in Bejeweled Twist or matching four gems in a square in Bejeweled Stars.

When detonated, it clears gems in flames in a 3x3 radius as well as triggering any special gems in that area, with any Hypercube detonating based on the color of the Flame Gem, on the same area.

Combination effects

In Bejeweled Stars, this Special Gem can be swapped with other Special Gems in order to produce the following effects:

  • Flame Gem: Detonates in a 4x3 area with an additional 6 tiles at the end of the area's middle row and two columns or column and two rows depending on the shape of the match whether it's vertical or horizontal.
  • Star Gem: Detonates in 3x3 area with sending lightning in ways.
  • Hypercube: Detonates the swapped Flame Gem as well as turning all normal gems into Flame Gems and detonating any special gem of the same color.
  • Darksphere: Detonates the swapped Flame Gem as well as turning all normal gems into Hypercubes and detonating any special gem of the same color.

  • When looked at closely, the player can see sparks coming off the gem.
  • A Yellow Gem's fire appears more orange than the ones on gems of other colors. This is likely to provide better distinction between the gem and the particle effects.
  • It appears that the flame animation is on a different layer than the gem itself, as when a gem is spinning, the fire stays in place. This is especially evident with red Flame Gems.
    • Also in PC and Mac versions of Bejeweled Blitz and Bejeweled 3, if the player looks very closely when the space bar is pressed (which pauses the game), the flames completely disappear just before the gems themselves disappear in order to pause the game. This also occurs when the 'Menu' button is accessed.
  • In some versions of Bejeweled 3, adjacent gems will flash with the bright light given off of the Flame Gem.
  • There is a bug in which a Flame Gem doesn't lose after explosion in Bejeweled 3. When the player detonate a Flame Gem right after it's created, it will get another Flame Gem. Colloquially, it is referred to as a "bonus Flame Gem."
    • When this occurs, when a Flame Gem is created and quickly detonate it, the particles of flame gem doesn't lose but the explosion animation still applies. An instance of the bug happening can be found here.
  • The square Flame Gem match makes Bejeweled Stars the only Bejeweled title to allow a match of fewer than three gems on any one line.
  • The sound effect of the Flame Gem in Bejeweled Classic is different from Bejeweled 3.
  • In Bejeweled Stars, Flame Gem can be created by using the Flame Swapper power.
